2020 Orthotics Seminar- Orthotic Fabrication by ORFIT

This is a one-day course on fabrication of upper extremity orthoses. Sign up for one date only as the course repeats itself the second date.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to: 1) Gain understanding of the indications, precautions, and contraindications for orthotic interventions for the upper extremity. 2) Appreciate the mechanical properties required to fabricate low temperature thermoplastic immobilization/mobilization orthoses for the upper extremity, 3) Develop skills in handling different thermoplastic materials. 4) develop skills in proper selectin of different thermoplastic materials for specific needs. 5) develop skills necessary to successfully fabricate and fit orthoses. 6) Understand the importance and benefits of immobilization/mobilization orthoses.

Instructor: Brief CV of Deborah A. Schwartz, OTD, OTR/L, CHT
Deborah A. Schwartz, OTD, OTR/L, CHT received her degree in Occupational Therapy, Magna Cum Laude, from State University of New York in 1984 and received her Doctorate of Occupational Therapy from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions in 2010. Debby has been working in the area of hand therapy since 1991. She has been employed by Orfit Industries America since 2007 and works as their Product and Educational Specialist. She also serves as an adjunct professor in the Occupational Therapy Department of Touro College in New York City. Debby has written numerous articles which have been published in the Journal of Hand Therapy, HAND, and ADVANCE for OT Practitioners and has written several book chapters for Hand Therapy references. Debby has also lectured at national and international conferences sponsored by AOTA and ASHT. She has also received many awards including the 2005 Evelyn Mackin Traveling Hand Therapist Award and “Certificate of Recognition” for her contribution to the ASHT Innovation Gallery in 2012. Debby has also served on various committees including the ASHT Leadership Development Program (2008) and International Committee for ASHT (2004-2011), and Item Writer for the HTCC and NBCOT (1998). She is currently teaching orthotic fabrication workshops around the country, and occasionally in other countries as well. Debby has just published a text book on orthotic fabrication with her colleague, Dr. Katherine Schofield. The book is especially helpful for Occupational Therapy students and novice Occupational Therapy practitioners but will also become part of a CEU course for experienced hand therapists as well.
